Topic | Disruption in the supply of pharmaceutical raw materials and inferior quality medicines during the pandemic Lessons learnt and measures moving forward
Proposal Content (Describe your proposal, including potential areas of collaboration, purpose, and expected impact.) |
During the Covid 19 pandemic beginning early 2020 there were severe shortages in pharmaceutical raw materials especially in commonly needed essential medicines such as paracetamol acetaminophen Some suggest that this was due to the diversion of attention of raw material and pharmaceutical product manufacturers to vaccine production and also the disruption in transport and logistics brought about by the shut-downs during the pandemic Simultaneously, unscrupulous persons also resorted to capitalising on the situation by producing and marketing substandard and adulterated products This resulted on deaths of children due to use of inferior quality raw materials There are important lessons to be learnt on how the WHO, pharmaceutical companies and regulatory agencies responded or should have responded to these challenges The world needs to be prepared for the next pandemic The proposed 2-day seminar will invite thought leaders from these different stake holders, including WHO, regulatory and enforcement agencies, to present and propose how we can be adequately prepared for the next pandemic or global supply chain and logistic disruption
